Preferences in Care Homes
SSMR recently conducted a study into whether the
food preferences of older people can be met in care

focus group discussions with residents, along with
interviews with care and catering staff. The
study was carried out with the University of

. Self-care
for Patients on Haemodialysis
Many of SSMR’s studies have been concerned with
health issues. A recent study conducted by SSMR
concerned treatment and self-care for kidney
patients receiving dialysis treatment. The
study was commissioned by
Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
The Modernisation Initiative Team asked SSMR
researchers to visit 11 haemodialysis units in South
London and Kent and interview almost 700 patients
while they were receiving treatment. The
findings will provide guidance on the extent to
which patients would like to self-care.

Surrey County Council

the Council gain an understanding of the main
sources of news for its residents.
